Best Dressed Care Home title for Salvation Army Hawthorns Care Home

The Hawthorns Care Home in Buxton has won the title of Best Dressed Care Home in the Town at the Annual Well Dressing and Carnival celebrations.

The residents spent 6 weeks preparing decorations which were then displayed in the front garden of the home.

Nearby Salvationists at Macclesfield collected hundreds of coloured carrier bags which the residents folded into flowers to mimic the idea of the original well dressing technique. The display included a four foot Ark, a beautiful rainbow (every colour needed was donated) and a menagerie of animals and birds.

Other residents painted insects and animals which were then laminated and added to the display. As stewards of God’s resources, it was important that the whole display was both recycled and recyclable, a sentiment that the residents echoed.

The Hawthorns is the only Salvation Army presence in Buxton and the display certainly raised the profile of the home, whilst creating a fun display that was enjoyed by young and old alike.

The carnival Queen presented the trophy directly to the residents and met one of the residents who was carnival queen in the 1930’s. One of the residents said “We were absolutely thrilled to win the first prize. A lot of hard work and many hours went into making it”.
