As families and friends prepare to gather for the holidays, the last little bits on the Christmas shopping list are bought and the TV channels are laden with festive films, it is a hard to believe that the season celebrating the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ is well and truly upon us yet again.

GENERAL John Gowans was promoted to Glory from a nursing home in South London today, 8 December 2012, at the age of 78, after a long period of declining health.

The event began in Sneinton, Nottingham – birthplace of Salvation Army Founder William Booth – on Saturday morning when the Lord Mayor of Nottingham (Councillor Leon Unczur) greeted the Army's world leader. Later, numerous Salvationists witnessed to their faith in the city's Market Square. Lincoln Band and Nottingham Arnold Corps (church) members shared the gospel with passers-by, information stalls attracted interest and the divisional emergency vehicle served free refreshments.
