On 19 May, the Olympic Flame set off on an epic whistle-stop tour of the UK for the Torch Relay - celebrating the 2012 Summer Olympics.

From Jersey to Cardiff, the beautiful golden torch covered a total distance of 8,000 miles over 70 days – passing Salvation Army churches along the way.

More than 150 people lined the streets of Cradley Heath, West Midlands, on Friday morning to ring their bells to herald the beginning of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The successful celebration in Cradley Heath was organised by Major Elizabeth Hancock and Matthew Griffiths, from Cradley Heath Salvation Army, who invited local residents in the Halesowen and Sandwell area to take part.

The leader of Greenford Salvation Army is looking forward to her second Torch Relay experience when the famed emblem makes its way through her area tomorrow (24th July) from 4:30pm.

Envoy Kath Davison and members of her church will be distributing copies of The War Cry on Kensington Road, Greenford is the torch makes its way to Uxbridge.

Commons Health Committee published a report on alcohol strategy today (19 July). It found:
 

  • Health impact of chronic alcohol misuse is significant and greater emphasis needs to be placed on addressing that impact.
  • Government’s Alcohol Strategy needs some clearer objectives to provide a framework for both policy judgements and accountability.
  • On the minimum price of alcohol the Government a transparent process in place to ensure that the price level is evidence-based and is monitored over time to assess its effectiveness. It also recommends that there should be a 'sunset clause' on the implementation of a minimum price.
