Last night (Thursday 21st April 2016), The Salvation Army lit a beacon to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday at Hendon Beach in Sunderland.

Staff and service users from our centre for people experiencing homelessness, Swan Lodge Lifehouse joined officers and congregation from the local church on the cliff tops above the beach.

Christine Ritchie, centre manager at Swan Lodge, said: “We were delighted to have the opportunity to join communities all over the country and as far away as the Virgin Islands to light a beacon in celebration of the Queen’s birthday.”

Our beacon was just one of 1000 beacons lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories.
