Salvation Army leader hails new homeless centre

The leader of the Salvation Army in the UK and Ireland has praised staff and service users at a new centre for homeless people.

Commissioner Clive Adams visited Ty Ogwr Lifehouse in Bridgend, south Wales, to see first hand its 16 flats providing temporary accommodation.

The project has been developed in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council and Hafod Care Association. Based at Coity Road, Ty Ogwr offers accommodation and floating support.

The nine members of staff at the centre provide a homely, safe environment for residents aged 18 and over, and help them access services relating to independent living, including access to 24 hour emergency on-call support response.

Commissioner Adams was joined by a group of Ty Ogwr service users who told him about the improved standard of life at the centre compared to hostels and B&Bs.

He said: "The fantastic staff at our Lifehouses around the UK are helping people rebuild their lives through a range of initiatives. The Salvation Army’s work with homeless people has been an integral part of our mission for more than 130 years.”

Janine Rees, Service Manager at Ty Ogwr, said:  “We were delighted to welcome Commissioner Adams to our centre, which provides more than just a roof over someone's head. It's an example of how The Salvation Army helps the whole person and not just their problems.”
